Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about Clarify and how the tools work.

Is Clarify free to use?
Yes, all tools and guides are completely free. No sign-up, no credit card, no catch. We don't even have a paid tier.
Do you store my calculations?
No. Everything runs in your browser. Your inputs never leave your device. We use basic analytics (Google Tag Manager) to understand which tools are popular, but we don't track what you calculate.
Why don't you cover every device?
We focus on common reference points. The calculators work with any specs you enter—diagonal size, resolution, DPR—so you can plug in whatever device you're working with.
Can I share a calculation with my team?
Yes. Most tools update the URL as you change inputs. Copy the URL and your teammate will see the same numbers when they open it.
Why is the viewport different from the resolution?
Modern devices use multiple physical pixels to render one CSS pixel (that's the device pixel ratio or DPR). A phone with 1179×2556 physical pixels might report 393×852 CSS pixels because it uses 3× scaling.
How accurate are the grid suggestions?
They're conservative starting points, not prescriptions. A 4-column mobile grid with 16px gutters works for most apps, but your content might need something different.
Do you have an API?
Not currently. The calculations are simple enough that you can implement them yourself if you need programmatic access. The formulas are documented in our guides.
Who maintains Clarify?
A small team of designers and developers who needed these tools for our own work. We got tired of hunting through documentation every time we needed a viewport size.
